Open your eyes; Italy is what dreams are made of! Just like how teenager Lizzie McGuire’s fantasy turned into reality as she set her foot in the magical city of Rome. The Walt Disney comedy unravels how protagonist Lizzie McGuire (Hilary Duff) went from a junior high school graduate to a European pop star. Besides the adventures of Lizzie, the film also showed the audience the beauty of Italy through its different magnificent destinations.

What Places were featured in the Lizzie McGuire Movie?

For the first stop, we have the fountain where Lizzie tossed a coin and made a wish, The Trevi Fountain.

Trevi Fountain

Located in Rome’s Trevi district, the late Baroque masterpiece Italian Fontana di Trevi is the best-known fountain in Rome. It was designed by Nicola Salvi in 1732 during a competition; his creation was considered a scenic wonder.  

The massive fountain stands around 85 feet and is approximately 160 feet wide. Found at its core is Oceanus standing proudly atop a chariot pulled by sea horses and partnered with tritons. The statue of Oceanus was created by Pietro Bracci. Sculptures of Abundance and Health are also featured. To mold the fountain, it took thirty years. After Salvi’s death in 1751, Giuseppe Pannini overtook the project. The Trevi Fountain was completed in 1762.

Lizzie made a wish here in the fountain because, according to legend, people who toss coins into its waters will have their wishes granted. Trivia time! The coins that are thrown in the water are being collected and donated to charity.

Spanish Steps show the beauty of Italy

“Goodbye Lizzie McGuire, hello fabulous!” For the next stop, we will be visiting The Spanish Steps, where Lizzie emerges after her makeover with the stylist of Paolo. 

Named after the neighboring Spanish Embassy, the Spanish Steps links the Piazza di Spagna at the bottom with Piazza Trinita Dei Monti at the top. Fun fact! The Italian word for the steps is la Scalinata, derived from the proper name, “La Scalinata di Trinita Dei Monti.

The design of architect Francesco de Sanctis and the financing of French diplomat Étienne Gueffier brought the stairs to life from 1723 to 1725. Of course, the steps are indeed the perfect place for Lizzie to show off her new pop star look! 

The Roman Colosseum

What better final destination in our Rome trip with Lizzie than the Colosseum itself? Considered as an icon of Rome, the Colosseum is a massive giant amphitheater.

The Colosseum has a long trace of history. During Medieval times, it was used as a church. Afterward, it was utilized as a fortress by two distinguished Roman families, the Frangipane and the Annibaldi. Both natural and artificial disasters have severely damaged the Colosseum. In the 1990s, a restoration project led by Pope Pius VIII was undertaken. 

 The director of The Lizzie McGuire Movie was a genius to have the final performance at The Colosseum. A phenomenal performance right at the cultural icon of Rome, just perfect indeed! 

Call Me By Your Name

Based on the applauded novel by André Aciman, Call Me By Your Name is a sensual and lush tale of first love.

In the summer of 1983, in the Italian countryside, 17-year-old lad Elio (Timothée Chalamet) meets Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old temporary research assistant of Elio’s father (Michael Stuhlbarg).

The film shows how Elio grows from a naive boy to a flirty adolescent to a passionate lover, and alas, a heartbroken adult. Call Me By Your Name utilizes a slow buildup to its emotional beats; it spotlights the small gestures. The Italian film is a coming-of-age story that the audience can relate to.

Call Me By Your Name also touches the theme of forbidden love, as well as growing up. The beauty of Northern Italy was definitely captured through the eyes of the protagonist for the audience to see. Moreover, Italian Director Luca Guadagnino made sure to showcase Italian culture in the film.

Despite English being the primary language used in the film, it is noticeable that the Italian language was spoken a fair amount of time. For instance, the word ciao can be heard numerous times. Originally from the Venetian language, ciao is an exclamation used as an informal greeting or farewell. Also, the titles of signore and signora can be heard from the lips of the character. Signore is a conventional Italian title of respect for a man, while signora is for a woman. An old Italian slang was mentioned as well! In one scene, a guy said the word “cuccare,” which means to pick up( a guy or a girl).

In the movie, many Italian newspapers and publications can be spotted. Elio’s father’s favorite was Corriere della Sera, but Quattrote, and L’L Espresso were present also.

Meanwhile, Elio was seen reading Diabolik, an Italian comic series revolving around a genius thief. Fun fact, the comics began in 1962 and are still ongoing! There was a scene too where famous ex-comedian Beppe Grillo was shown on television.A political song was also played on the radio while Elio was playing with his peach. Most people would think it was a love song, but Radio Varsavia is actually a song about the situation of the working classes in communist countries.

Italian politics

In the June of 1983, general elections were held to set the Italian parliament. In Call Me By Your Name, there were electoral posters spotted. During the lunch where Elio has a nosebleed, the name Bettino Craxi was mentioned a lot of times by his parents and the loud couple. Craxi was actually a member of the Socialist party who emerged as prime minister after the elections.  The portrait of Benito Mussolini was seen hanging above the front door of the lady who gave the protagonist water. Mussolini was the former prime minister of Italy from 11922-1923, who founded and led the National Fascist Party as well.

The Godfather

“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.”

Now, who would not know where this iconic line comes from? Considered as one of the greatest classic films, The Godfather revolves around the Corleone crime family. Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) protects his godchildren, both literal and symbolic, by going around the law, and then demanding their eternal loyalty.

In exchange, they have to agree to return the favor—by means legal or illegal. The movie shows us the Mafia’s perspective from the inside. Here, we do not see gambling or prostitution. In the world of the Mafia, the real enemies are the traitors. The film depicts that one cannot escape their destiny. Youngest son Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), who wanted to escape the family business, ended up spearheading the organization after his father passed. For the Corleones, the family would always come first.

And perhaps, food would come second. In the movie, different Italian dishes were seen that showcase the beauty of Italy. Of course, to run an organization, their stomachs must be full.

First up, we have the Cannolis. Who would forget it? In the film, Clemenza (Richard Castellano) said.

“Leave the gun. Take the Cannoli.”

What Italian Food is Featured in The Godfather?

Well, don’t mind if I do! But actually, the pastry is a symbol of fertility; that’s why it was an ironic circle of life moment when they killed someone and said the line.

Invented in Sicily, the long slender pastry is derived from the Italian word for “reed.” Cannolis are ricotta-filled tube-shaped shells of pastry dough, which may I say are popular in the Sicilian tradition. Metal cannoli molds are used to shape the dough into hollow tubes. For the fillings, ricotta and confectioner’s sugar are the ingredients. Take note that sheep ricotta is needed for the filling. It is also best to stuff the Cannolis just a few minutes before eating because if not, the filling may ruin the crispness of the shell.

The Beauty of Italy is that the dessert is also really nice to eat while taking a walk. Also, Cannolis have become a breakfast treat nowadays. Did you know that some people even like to decorate its ends with chocolate? Not only that but minced pistachios and candied fruit as well!

Veal Marsala

Next up, let’s have a taste of the corrupt cop’s favorite dish, which is none other than Veal Marsala! Fond of eating chicken? This one’s for you! The dish comes from the classic Italian scaloppine recipe, which is popular in Western Sicily.

The Marsala wine is cultivated in that region, and the butchering of young cows (veal) was regarded as a delicacy. Flour, salt and pepper, sage leaves, salted butter, shallots, rosemary, chicken stock and mushrooms are some of the ingredients needed to prepare the dish. Also,the cooking time is quicker than other dishes because the veal is already thin, so no need to wait for long!

In Italy, Sundays are when the family gathers around after attending church.  Most women spend the day slowly cooking a delectable meat sauce, also known as Sunday Gravy, for everyone. In the film, Clemenza demonstrates to Michael how to cook for 20 guys, “because you never know when you’ll need to feed 20 guys.”

The sauce is not so much of a meal really, but more of a symbol of everybody coming together.  Since a lot of stomachs need to be filled, cheaper cuts of meat are likely to be favored as ingredients go. Fun fact, the recipe used in The Godfather is actually Director Francis Ford Coppola’s own recipe. He figured that if ever the film becomes a flop, at least the audience would have a good sauce recipe. To cook the director’s recipe, you’ll need olive oil, garlic, tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian sausages, meatballs, sugar, and dry red wine.

It has never been easier for tourists and visitors to go to Tagaytay or even find house and lot near Nuvali in Santa Rosa until the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) came into completion.

Though the complete 45-kilometer expressway is anticipated to be in full completion by 2023, the Silang East Exchange of the CALAX was finally opened on August 24 this year.

Santa Rosa, Laguna is dubbed Lion City of the south for good reason! It’s beauty is unparalleled!

CALAX will have nine interchanges and would start from Kawit, Cavite to Mamplasan in Laguna upon completion. According to the itinerary, the route will pass through Kawit, Imus City, Dasmariñas City, General Trias City, and Silang in Cavite, while in Laguna the route will pass through Santa Rosa City and Biñan City.

Why was the CALAX Made?

The government aims to develop national policies and provide transportation facilities for the Ecozones in Cavite and Laguna. Another thing is to improve traffic flow, especially along Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway, and Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Road. These areas are prone to traffic jams. The action will result in the development of a competitive investment environment for Region IV-A/CALABARZON.

Complete Guide to CALAX

At the South Luzon Expressway’s Greenfield City (Mamplasan) Exit in Biñan, CALAX begins at a roundabout before continuing west and turning southwest through the undeveloped private property.

Near the intersection of Greenfield Parkway and Laguna Boulevard, it enters the Laguna Boulevard right-of-way. Continuing southwest, it passes barangays Loma and Timbao, which combine developed and undeveloped areas. Afterward, it crosses the Laguna Technopark, the Laguna Campus of De La Salle University, and several gated communities. You can have access to them through service roads that are also Laguna Boulevard’s southbound lanes.

In this expressway section, bridges and mechanically stabilized earth walls cover major intersections and accesses, while a viaduct goes over another significant intersection.

It crosses the Silang-Santa Rosa River and the Cavite-Laguna provincial boundary again before leaving Nuvali Boulevard. It continues through cornfields until it reaches the Santa Rosa City Exit, leading to Santa Rosa-Tagaytay Road and easy route towards the off-road trails by mountain bike near Nuvali. The interchange is linked to the Cavite sector of the expressway by a stub section west of it.

Near the Ayala Westgrove Heights, the expressway continues southwest and crosses over a bridge before entering a cut section. Following a northwest turn, the road crosses over Tibig Road before ending at the Tibig-Kaong interchange, an east-west diamond interchange. The expressway will be connected to the Cavite segment by road west of the Silang East interchange.

Construction

In time for All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, the first 8.9 kilometers (5.5 mi) of the expressway became accessible on October 30, 2019. Ten thousand vehicles can enter and exit at the Mamplasan Interchange in Biñan, Laguna, and Santa Rosa – Tagaytay Road. DPWH Secretary Mark Villar reported that this would reduce travel time to 10 minutes from 45 minutes. However, the segment was supposed to be operational by December 2018 or the beginning of February 2019.

The Laguna Technopark Exit in Biñan and Laguna Boulevard Exit in Santa Rosa opened on August 18, 2020.

Silang East interchange in Cavite opens to the public on August 24, 2021. This section is 6 kilometers long (3.7 miles long). But it wasn’t supposed to open until June 2021. In the meantime, construction on the area leading to the Silang interchange is scheduled for 2022.

How much is the toll fee in CALAX?

There is a toll system for the Cavite-Laguna Expressway, which varies according to the type of vehicle and the distance traveled. Initially, there were two operational toll gates on the first segment of the 8.9-kilometer (5.5 mi) expressway, and motorists paid a fixed rate at their exit points.

Santa Rosa City and Mamplasan. Easytrip Services Corporation operates the ETC system on the expressway, collecting tolls on mixed lanes at the toll barriers.

CALAX Pricelist include Class 1 – Php64 | Class 2 – 128 | Class 3 – 192

The toll rates are inclusive of 12% VAT, according to the law.

What areas do CALAX pass?

As seen in the above CALAX road map, there will be interchanges in the following areas: Kawit, Open Canal, Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway, Silang East, Santa Rosa-Tagaytay Road, Laguna Boulevard, and Laguna Technopark. Thus, in addition to enabling cost-effective logistics, additional business investment, and job growth, CALAX will boost tourism and business investment.

Kawit, Cavite

The infrastructure project for CALAX will begin in Kawit, Cavite, as depicted in the CALAX route map. This municipality is historically significant for being the hometown of the Philippines ‘ first president, Emilio Aguinaldo, whose birthplace is the cradle of Philippine independence. 

General Trias City

There are numerous industrial parks in General Trias—Cavite Export Processing Zone and Golden Gate Industrial Park Phase I and II, for instance—and several manufacturing companies occupy these parks.

Imus City

In addition to housing various industries, such as banking, agriculture, and tourism, Imus is one of the most urbanized cities in the province. Imus’ manufacturing industry is particularly noteworthy; Annie’s Candy Manufacturing, Inc., Liwayway Markets, and San Miguel-Yamamura Asia Corp are among the companies housed in the Imus Informal Industrial Estate and Anabu Hills Industrial Estate. Additionally, electronics, food, bamboo, woodcraft, and furniture, all produced to export standards, can be found in the area.

Dasmariñas City

Carmona, Cavite

Originally a predominantly agricultural municipality, most Carmona residents make their living by producing crops, fruit, and vegetables. Nevertheless, Carmona, like most of Cavite, has been industrialized over the years. As a result, a large part of the economy revolves around food producers, metalworkers, concrete producers, artisans, furniture manufacturers, garment manufacturers, and countless other industries.

Silang, Cavite

CALAX provides services to this landlocked municipality as well. Silang’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, including crop and fruit production and swine and poultry production. Nevertheless, Silang saw a boom in its manufacturing and trade industries after the advent of industrialization. At present, Daiichi Industrial Park is home to TOMS Electronics, BIG Philippines, Yushin Development, STAHL Philippines, and Maguyam Industrial Complex.

Biñan City

The stone church was built between 1618 and 1629 under the guidance of Fr. Hermando Cabrera. Renovations to the church and convent were carried out between 1839 and 1858 under the direction of Father Peregrin Prosper. The convent was severely destroyed during the liberation of the Philippines in 1945. Between 1948 and 1954, the church was renovated with the cooperation of parishioners under the guidance of Fathers Juan Coronel and Nicomedes Rosal. 

It is thought to be the world’s sole church dedicated to Saint Paul the First Hermit.

The Nagcarlan church was first built in 1583 under the chaplaincy of its first priest, Father Tomas de Miranda, utilizing light materials such as nipa and wood, and was dedicated to St. Bartholomew. Father Tomas de Miranda also pioneered wheat production in the province. During the tenure of Father Cristobal Torres, a second church made of stone and bricks donated by the people was completed in 1752.

The remodeling in 1845, under the leadership of Father Vicente Velloc, included the erection of the choir loft on three lofty arches and the use of adobe rocks. St. Bartholomew Church’s tiered wall is typically associated with Baroque design. The church’s façade design features a semicircular arched main entrance with semicircular windows, as well as towering pedestals and columns in the side entry.

4. St. John the Baptist Church, Liliw

Father Miguel de San Lucas founded St. John the Baptist Church in 1605 in honor of St. John the Baptist. Because it was largely located in the municipality of Liliw, the Philippines’ Slipper Capital, it was also known as Liliw Church. 

The church, however, was damaged by the Luzon earthquake of 1880. It was reconstructed in 1885, but the church was regrettably damaged again in 1885, this time by fire. It was later reconstructed with the cooperation of its parishioners and the community, and they have worked together to conserve and restore this one-of-a-kind gem till now. 

As you approach the cathedral, you’ll be greeted by three golden altars and be mesmerized by its forms. The main altar in the center has thirteen niches with saint sculptures, while the two smaller altars on either side have four niches with saint statues. 

Saint John the Baptist Church is located in the heart of Liliw, a charming village with well-preserved medieval architecture. With the superbly maintained red-brick baroque building built in the mid-1600s, you can’t help but be transported back in time. Make a point of lighting a candle at Capilla de San Buenaventura, which is accessible by an unassuming arched passage to the left of the church entrance.

5. Saint Mary Magdalene Parish Church

The church was consecrated to Mary Magdalene in 1821 and was fashioned entirely of cogon and wood at the time. In 1829, Captain Pablo de la Conception requested permission to build a stone parish, but his proposal did not meet the demands of the people, who were obliged to pay taxes, sand, and stone to be used as the primary material for the church’s reconstruction. The church’s construction began in 1839 and was completed in 1861, including the bell. Our national hero, Emilio Aguinaldo, sought refuge in this chapel during the Philippine Revolutionary War in 1898, and his blood was spilled here. 

Magdalena Church is a relatively new church in comparison to the others on our list, yet it has witnessed one of the most pivotal times in Philippine history. Inside this 165-year-old stone church, you’ll find Emilio Jacinto’s shrine. It commemorates a time when the church offered refuge to one of Katipunan’s greatest warriors.

The fortress church was burned down in 1606 while it was being built. Majayjay also served as an infirmary for the elderly religious until it was relocated to Lumban in 1606. The church was partially burnt again in 1660. Rehabilitation began in 1711 and was finished in 1730 by Father Jose de Puertollano with the help of 14,000 people forced to work at a cost of $26,000. Majayjay residents worked for 19 years to finish the church, which is made of adobe stone with red tiles and high-quality wood. The St. Gregory the Great Parish Church, which was built in 1730, is one of the Philippines’ largest churches. The stone church was destroyed by a typhoon a century later, but it was repaired in the years that followed. 

St. Gregory the Great Parish Church or the Majayjay Church was declared as a National Culture Treasure by the Natural Museum in 2001. It is one of the country’s oldest and best-preserved churches, having been built in 1649. This Romanesque church has aged gracefully, with natural overgrowth that only adds to its allure. Many religious relics, including an old church bell, are housed there.
