Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Art in the Park was first held on a virtual platform in 2020. This year, Art in the Park was back for another online edition.

The Art in the Park website (www.artinthepark.ph) hosted the country’s most accessible art fair last April 24 to May 1. Art in the Park is the cheaper counterpart to the Art Fair. Over 61 galleries, art schools, independent art spaces, art collectives, and, for the first time, an NFT marketplace exhibited their work online.

It was also thrilled to host a program of events and exhibits live last April 28 in Jaime C. Velasquez Park in Makati City, as the world opens up to more face-to-face activities.

Rodel Tapaya and Marina Cruz exhibits

Rodel Tapaya and Marina Cruz, husband and wife, are two of the most important painters in the country today. Art in the Park 2022 proudly welcomes them back.

Each artist showed a single project, demonstrating their continued interest in experimenting with different media. Mr. Tapaya had nine works displayed for Chicken Army, and Ms. Cruz had eleven works on display for Imprinted Musings.

Mr. Tapaya’s work was characterized by visionary narrative tableaux that mixed folklore and social history into artistic figurations characterized Mr. Tapaya’s work. Ms. Cruz, meantime, continued to investigate the materiality of vintage things, pictures, and clothes, as well as how they construct her personal narrative.

How it started

When Ms. Cruz was a second-year college student, she rummaged through her mother’s things when she came across her mother’s baptismal gown.

It was a poignant occasion for her because her mother, Elisa, a primary school teacher, was frequently sick at the time of the discovery. She felt compelled to keep that memory alive. She recognized the importance of time and life. She realized that one must appreciate every minute with their loved ones because they might never get another chance.

The inspiration continued, and she also retraced her twin mother’s and aunt’s survival stories while weaving in the complexities of their nostalgic memories.

IsTorya

The duo launched IsTorya, a narrative design firm steeped in Filipino stories that embraces creativity, love of identity, and innovative forms of learning.

Studio 1616

Studio 1616, a group of art students led by artist Lynyrd Paras who came together in 2012 to display their work at Art in the Park. A decade later, and in honor of the fair’s 16th anniversary, they were back with 15 artworks for sale on the website, each measuring 16 × 16 inches.

They also had a live installation of their piece, Reflect Deflect, at Jaime Velasquez Park. The work was inspired by Art in the Park’s tents, and used steel and mirrors as reflective surfaces to urge visitors to look at themselves more attentively.

Johanna Helmuth, Yeo Kaa, Jeremae Jumaoas, Jerahmeel Alvarez, Keb Cerda, Dale Erispe, Jayvee David, Jett Osian, Levin Paras, Ciron Seeres, Kiko Urquiola, Gian Miroe, Roy Rosatase, Yani Unsana, and Erick Villaruz are among the Studio 1616 artists.

Monster Mayhem Megamash

Part 1

With Monster Mayhem Megamash, street artist Distort Monsters combined digital and traditional art.

The artist’s works are influenced by skateboarding and punk rock, and they revolve around overcoming adversity with some hardcore resilience. He’s been painting for almost a decade, and his work has been displayed in galleries, on canvas, as art toys, in public installations, and in the metaverse.

Part 2

Part two of Monster Mayhem MegaMash, presented by Art in the Park in collaboration with Globe Platinum, featured 100 works from the artist’s colorful animals in two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and digital formats, ranging from murals to beyond NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

These one-of-a-kind monsters were sold as giclee prints on www.artinthepark.ph, with unique QR codes that, when activated, allowed customers to onboard the images as NFTs, which they also owned.

The online display, which costs P9,500,was based on Blindboxes, in which when customers receive the prints, they don’t know which of the 100 unique artworks and non-financial products they’ve purchased.

Live installation

Monster Mayhem MegaMash was accompanied by a live installation of ten three-foot-high resin sculptures. From April 24 to May 1, they were on display at Jaime Velasquez Park.

INK in the Park

As part of their 30th-anniversary celebration, Ang Illustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK) held an exhibit called INK in the Park, featuring 40 works by illustrators such as Juno Abreu, Aldy Aguirre, Fran Alvarez, Jamie Bauza, Benedir Dasig, Danielle Florendo, Liza Flores, Tin Javier, Jasmin Lacay, LD Mendoza, Arli Pagaduan

In 1991, Ang INK, the country’s first and only organization of children’s illustrators, was created as a collective effort to professionalize and promote the business.

Full-time freelance illustrators, graphic designers, painters, writer-illustrators, teachers as well as students in visual arts, and artists working in publishing organizations, design-related firms, and advertising agencies make up the organization’s membership.

Art in the Park continued to benefit the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, which provides projects and programs to assist the National Museum of the Philippines and its network.

It’s primary plot is offered to Sly as entertainment for his enjoyment.

Fascinating or Sexist?

Some consider “The Taming of the Shrew” one of Shakespeare’s most fascinating comedies. Others find it sexist or at least unpleasant in terms of how it portrays women and how they should behave.

The feminist spin on a Shakespeare classic

Eugene Ballet Artistic Director Toni Pimble challenged this 16th-century work and added a contemporary feminist twist through music and dance when creating an avant-garde, whimsical and gloomy two-part ballet act that will premiere on May 14 and 15.

The plot with a twist

The plot focuses on two arranged marriages and gender roles common in Shakespeare’s time when women were expected to be overmodest, trapped in their homes, obedient, and dominated by their husbands.

In the center of the plot of this ballet is Katherine (Danielle Tolmie), energetic, self-confident, assertive, and the author of her own life path; and Petruchio (Mark Tucker), who seeks love and money and follows traditional male social norms of his time in terms of interpersonal relationships and arranged marriages.

This attitude is illustrated when he tells Katherine that he was born to tame her out of her wild ways into a Kate who is as accommodating as other Kates in the household. (Act III Scene 1)

A Story to Tell for Eugene Ballet

The Taming of the Shrew is a tough story to tell, given the many problems it presents when viewed from today’s perspective. As a ballet, Eugene Ballet can’t help but glimpse the progression of the two characters in the most superficial way.

They use three pas de deux scenes in which Katherine and Petruchio go from adversaries meeting for the first time to a couple of yearning for a meaningful relationship. After years of growing to understand and respect their arranged marriage, the two people in it finally find love and respect for each other.

Eugene Ballet’s Approach to telling the Story

Toni Pimble’s storytelling style was influenced by Elizabeth Winkler’s June 2019 Atlantic magazine article. The magazine article suggested that Shakespeare’s plays may have been written by a woman based on the powerful and perceptive lines of the female characters in her work. If true, the English writer Amelia Bassano (1569-1645), one of the first women to establish herself as a professional poet, could have been the author.

Interesting Hypothesis

Pimble found the idea of this hypothesis interesting from the beginning of the ballet and incorporated it into her choreography. Onstage is a character, presumed to be Shakespeare, sitting at a desk while quotes from various female Shakespearean characters are projected on a screen above. Only when the author stands up and turns around does the audience realize that it is a woman who wrote the sentences, a subtle reference to Amelia Bassano.

The Shakespeare/Bassano character anchors the story of Pimble’s life, appearing at the beginning and before each act.

After the ballet, she walks back to her desk and sees quotes projected on the screen about the dancers, divided into men and women in a battle over a wedding dinner. Kate’s sister is a woman. Haag suggests that these quotes are ideas that arise in the author’s mind and reflect long-standing and often unresolved conflicts between men and women.

Eugene Ballet’s Right Music

Finding the right music is an important task in creating a ballet. It was in 2017 when Brian McWhorter (Orchestra Next Director) and Toni Pimble first discussed their interest in presenting scores by a female composer. They eventually discovered the playlist “The Great Female Composer” on the internet. It turned out to be like a rabbit hole.

The list included a mid-19th-century composer who neither McWhorter nor Pimble knew, but the music was immediately amazing. That person is the relatively little-known French composer Louise Farrenc (1804-1875).

Pimble believes that many of Farrenc’s chamber music pieces, especially the three symphonies, are as strong and vibrant as Beethoven and are undoubtedly suitable for the industrial era of the 19th century when ballet was set.

Eugene Ballet’s Innovative Set Design

Pimbel’s decision to situate the play in a drab and depressing nineteenth-century environment provided great prospects for creative set design.

This was the time of the industrial revolution when the widespread use of steam-powered machines transformed society and the world. It was a period when authors such as Jules Verne imagined a futuristic future based on emerging and imagined technologies.

Eugene’s architect Paul Dustrud and interactive mobile designer Joe Mross used this steam-powered mechanical world for their design work. Dustrud’s Victorian-set is big enough and sturdy enough to fully support the dancers who perform it. You can move through several sections, and in 23 scenes, it’s important to be able to quickly change stages in front of the audience. Scale models were used when Pimble planned dancer movements on stage.

Over 60 ballet outfits were designed by Pimble, who went to New York to buy the fabric needed for at least 150 yards of fabric. The costume reflects the aesthetics of heavy clothing at the time but is light enough for dancers to move easily. When possible, she used taffeta, stretch mesh, and other materials to create the outfit.

In May 2022, the 31st Southeast Asian Games will be held in Hanoi, highlighting the region’s sporting champions and rising talents.

Vietnam will host the Southeast Asian Games for the second time, from May 12 to 23, 2022. The COVID-19 epidemic forced the postponement of the 31st Southeast Asian Games, originally scheduled for November-December 2021.

A contest to name the mascot, as well as create a slogan and song for the festivities, was held in August of last year and received 557 entries. The saola design by Hanoi artist Ngo Xuan Khoi was voted the winner after meeting all of the organizers’ requirements.

The saola is an endangered bovine indigenous to the Truong Son mountain range in the central region.

Athletics and swimming, Olympic sports, and Southeast Asian sports in need of preservation are the three primary branches.
