As the world is opening up its borders for tourism and business, will popular countries be open to accepting leisure travel now?

The Covid pandemic has changed a lot on how we do things. One of these is how we travel. Pre-pandemic, anyone can simply bring a passport and some personal effects, at minimum, and purchase a ticket and accommodations online to a popular travel destination at the airport. Nowadays, it is important to travel responsibly to take into consideration not only your health, but also the health of others. Travelling for either business or pleasure now requires detailed preparations and regulatory compliance, way before you even consider an isolated modern luxury home or a popular luxury resort for your accommodations. But before you even make plans for a trip, the most important question is this: is it really safe to travel right now? Even if you have armed yourself with all the alcohol, face masks, personal disinfectant you can grab, it is impossible to guarantee that you are not at risk when traveling right now. As more countries are opening their borders in a bid to augment their economies, it is important to reiterate that your health during this pandemic cannot be guaranteed. Travel, just like any other venture, comes with uncontrollable variables, even if your route consists of the airport, hotel, car or bus or train, and then back, and that there is always a risk of infection especially in common and public places. 

But if you are getting cabin fever, or really want to resume your travel activities pre-pandemic, do not fret. Some countries have handled the pandemic much better and have actually proven to reduce the number of cases. Some countries have even managed to open its doors to the world and resumed their daily activities with health standards in place to ensure that the health risks are much lower, especially in public places. It is also worth noting that majority of them are following global protocols when it comes to accepting tourists and business travelers, for example, enforcing a 7 to 14-day quarantine at a recommended facility. Moreover, these countries are also requiring tourists and business travelers to get vaccinated. And if you select to head to a country that has a higher vaccination rate and lower number of cases, then the risks of getting an infection (and potentially bringing it back home) are considerably lower as well.

Countries that are open to tourists and business travelers

Do check the country’s latest travel requirements before planning your next trip.

As of November 2021, there are about 73 countries open for Filipino tourists. Each country has its own travel requirements ranging from RT-PCR tests and quarantine protocols, to COVID-19 insurance requirements and vaccinations. Some of the countries offer entry exemptions to Filipinos who are citizens of the destination country, returning residents, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have valid work visas and contracts, and diplomatic or UN passport holders going to post or on official travel.

While many more countries have reopened, some of the information below may no longer apply or have been changed according to their governments. We recommend visiting each country’s embassy website for the latest information about travelling to these countries.

Traveling in Asia

China – China temporarily suspended entry by non-Chinese nationals in the Philippines who are holding visas or residence permits. At the moment, the People’s Republic of China is currently not issuing any tourist visas. However, Chinese citizens can avail for a “travel passport” to travel abroad. Allowed travelers who have also received a Chinese vaccine can apply for a visa as normal.

Indonesia – Indonesia does not have any special regulations, but Filipino tourists are required to present visas provided by the Indonesian mission they applied from, as well as the Indonesia Health Alert Card. The visas should also reflect the purpose in entering the country, especially those who plan to go to Bali or are just passing through a connecting flight.

Hong Kong – Hong Kong accepts travel to the country, but Filipinos need to comply stricter requirements, including quarantine upon arrival and compliance to acceptable vaccination records. Workers such as domestic helpers have a special travel arrangement with the country provided they comply with the required vaccination records.

India – India expressed that the country will be fully reopening without need for quarantine.

Singapore – Singapore has introduced vaccinated travel lanes for certain countries. Tourists and business travelers from the Philippines must comply with Category 4 requirements, which are a Pre-Departure RT-PCR Test within 48 hours of departure to Singapore, an On-Arrival PCR Test, and a 10-day Stay-Home Notice.

Thailand – Thailand expressed that they are open to fully vaccinated travelers from 46 countries. Travelers need to have a negative PCR result, and must be subject to another test upon arrival. There will potentially be a travel corridor with Cambodia.

Bhutan – Bhutan is closed to all tourists. Bhutan may likely to be one of the last countries to open to tourism, so do check their embassy for travel requirements should you need to head there.

South Korea – South Korea is completely closed, but allow returning residents and nationals to fly back to the country. They do, however, are required to undergo quarantine. 

Traveling in the Caribbean and Americas

Argentina – As of November 1st, Argentina have announced a full re-opening to tourism. This means you may be able to make that special trip to Antarctica. 

Belize – As of October 1st, Belize airport has to international travelers with proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival. Travelers are also required to fill out the Belize Travel App. Homestays like a modern luxury home may be allowed if its operator have a “Gold Standard Operators” and hotels recognition as set out by the government. 

Brazil – Brazil is pretty much fully open to tourism. On the other hand, the country is struggling in managing cases in the country, so precautions are recommended. Travelers are required to have a negative PCR test regardless of vaccination status.

Canada – Canada is tentatively opening borders to fully vaccinated tourists since October. Travelers need to be completely vaccinated with a recommended COVID-19. If not, they are required to complete a vaccine series in Canada 14 days upon arrival. 

Cuba – The Cuban Tourism Ministry is expected to lift travel restrictions starting November 15. This simply means that quarantine may no longer be required for vaccinated tourist arrivals. However, there is some severe restrictions in place for tourist travel in Cuba, including accommodations. So booking a modern luxury home or a luxury condo homestay may be out of the question if it is not recommended by the national government.

Mexico – Yes, it is. Mexico is open to tourists of all nationalities arriving by air. However, not all areas of the country are open though. While a negative test is required, you may be screened and quarantined. The border with Belize and USA remains closed.

United States – The US is open to travel several countries, with quarantine in place for some nations, including the Philippines. Some Filipinos are now heading to the US for vaccine tourism, which has now become a thing. On November 7, USA will fully open to vaccinated tourists .

Open for Travel to these countries with a “travel passport”

As vaccines are rolled out, with some countries rolling it out much faster, it is expected in the hospitality and travel sector that some of these countries may implement “travel passports.” 

Cyprus – Cyprus is now completely open to vaccinated travelers, as well as for those who have taken a negative PCR test within 72 hour of arrival. Travelers from high-risk countries may have additional requirements. Travelers are required to fill out the Cyprus Flight Pass online first before entering the country. 

The EU – The EU announced that they will allow any person who has been vaccinated within the preceding two weeks as a tourist. This is related to the Digital Green Pass (travel passport). 

Greenland – Despite being part of Denmark, the tourists who head to Greenland will be making the trip from Iceland. According to Iceland, they will allow people into the country who have received the COVID-19 vaccine. 

Iceland – Iceland is now fully open to vaccinated visitors. With most Greenland tours leaving from Iceland we are hopeful this will lead to a resumption of Greenland cruises.

Israel – Israel s not open for tourists, but due to the speed of vaccinations in the country they are expected to be one of the first countries to fully open up. Tourists from Cyprus and Greece are allowed to travel to Israel.

Romania – Romania was one of the first countries to announce they would let in people who have received the vaccine. Tourists who have yet to get vaccinated must show a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to entry to the country, as well as leave within 48 hours of arriving. Romania will likely take part in the EU Travel Pass as they are part of the EU.

The United Kingdom – The United Kingdom is now open to vaccinated travelers for all intents and purposes. The UK has removed the Philippines from its “red list” on October 11.

Another classic included in the collection of the most famous work by Italian artists is the magnum opus of Raphael, entitled The School of Athens. Like Michelangelo, who was asked to decorate the Sistine Chapel, Raphael commissioned work for the Vatican City. This Italian art is a statement for the collision of two artistic and philosophical ideas, realism and idealism. The propagators of these two ideas can be identified through their hand gestures. Plato points his fingers to the sky to recognize the world of Ideals where Beauty, Truth, and Goodness are found. On the other hand, Aristotle points his hand towards the viewers of the painting, signifying material realism. Included in the most significant artworks representing the High Renaissance, the School of Athens is a classic masterpiece that remains Raphael’s most popular fresco painting.

Madonna and Child with Two Angels by Filippo Lipi

Painted between 1460 to 1465, the Madonna and Child with Two Angels introduced a new portrayal of the Virgin Mary and Jesus during the Early Renaissance period. In a dream-like state, the artwork is a portrait that displays a more human-looking Mary and baby Jesus, propped up by two angels that seem to grin at the viewers of the painting. According to historical accounts, Giovanni de Medici, an Italian banker and founder of Medici Bank, ordered the painting to give it to the King of Naples, but it was never delivered. To this current day, it sits in the Room 8 of Uffizi Gallery, held among a household of other beautiful paintings by Italian artists.

In fact, the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli was inspired by Filippo Lipi’s painting since Botticelli was a pupil under him. Showing the radiance and elegance of Mary in a new way, Madonna with her Child produced an iconic trademark in the Renaissance. The painting depicts Mary after a nun, Lucrezia Buti, whom Filippo Lipi ran away with after falling in love with her. The Venus of Urbino by Titian

Indeed, a High Renaissance painting to be discussed over a candlelit dinner and wine, the Venus of Urbino features a captivating and seductive Venus. In the background, maids are scrummaging around a chest, getting ready for an il toccamano, a ritual done before marriage to express consent. At the foot of the bed, a dog is used to symbolize fidelity in marriage, a concept present in Titian’s other artwork, “The Portrait of Eleonora Gonzaga.” Released in 1538, the Venus of Orbino, like many paintings by Italian artists on this list, is currently in the Uffizi Gallery. The painting was initially commissioned by Guidobaldo II della Rovere and taken to Florence as part of Vittoria della Rovere’s dowry, the last member of the family and wife of Grand Duke Tuscany.

The Venus of Urbino exemplifies the skill of Titian with regard to subject focus and skin softness. In the background, the painting is set in a rich patrician home in Venice during the 16th-century. One fashion designer who proved himself to be highly competitive in high fashion is Rajo Laurel. Coming from a prominent political family, he was forced to become a businessman or a lawyer, but he never wanted to be either of those. Ever since he was eleven, he knew his calling was to become a designer. In an interview with Wall Street Journal, he fondly recalled his experience as a kid with his grandmother and the one seamstress they had at home. His grandmother was instructing the seamstress how to make tea towels, maid’s uniforms, and dresses, and when he intervened, suggesting a better way of making these articles. You may have heard of that term already, but do you know what it actually is? You can create your own version of a Graze box.

Of course, it wouldn’t be called a graze box without the box itself! For it will serve as the container of your delicious snacks. First impressions last, so make sure the box you will be picking is indeed appealing and charming! In fact, let me list down some inspirations for you.

Chic box

The usual box is a brown box, so why not stand out with a black one?  Perhaps a white box? Or even better, a glass box! Once you’ve picked your box, let us move forward. 

For the main event, the snacks! Just thinking of the delicious food we can put here makes me so hungry!  

Cold cuts 

First off, we have the pertinent favorite, the Genoa Salami! Originating from the country of Italy, the uncooked salami made from pork is seasoned with garlic, peppercorns, and white or red wine. This type of salami is softer and greasier than soppressata, which has additional fat after the meat is ground. 

Another cold cut from Italy is the Coppa, also known as Capicola. Made from the muscle running from the neck to the rib of the pig, the dry-cured meat is spiced with cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Coppa is sliced very thin upon serving. Also, did you know that Capicola can be called “gagabool” as well? It is a slang term used by some Italian-Americans. 

A great addition to the cold cuts is the Spanish Chorizo! The fully-cured and cooked meat is made of chopped pork; it often contains pimento, a special type of paprika. Giving off a firm texture, the Spanish chorizo is either sweet or spicy.  

Indeed, save the best for the last, finally, we have the jamón Ibérico de Bellota, or popularly known as Iberian Ham. Made from the rear leg of the rare black Iberian pig, this type of meat is expensive. A Jamon 75% Iberico de Bellota Premium Pedroches Sliced 80g pack costs 1,145 Pesos.  

The prized Iberian ham is indeed creamy and fatty, making it one of the tastiest cold cut options.

Cheese 

If you want a savory, salty, and butter flavor, the Old Ford is the cheese for you. Originating from England, the cheese is made from the milk of the goat. In fact, you need to be very hands-on to make the Old Ford because it can only be made by aging, and pressing the cheese using your hands.  

Coming all the way from the country of China, we have the Extra Old Bitto. The cheese is aged for 10 years before it hits the market, making it one of the most expensive cheeses in the world. Upon taking a bite of the Old Bitto, you’ll taste sweet cheese, but after a while, it becomes spicy!  

White Stilton is a luxurious cheese that is actually the cousin of Britain’s famous blue cheese but is much creamier and has a tangerine taste.  

White stilton cheese can be infused with fruits, such as blueberries. Just look at mouth-watering cheese!

Pastry 

The 3 Seed Gourmet crackers are inspired by a Jewish Passover cracker (matzo) which is easy to make. The recipe for the crackers includes freshly ground, organic, hard winter wheat flour, vital gluten, and sesame seeds.  

Super soft and tender, the twisted bread adds to the charm of your graze box. To make these twists, you’ll need dry yeast, milk, sugar, and all-purpose flour.  

When it comes to the pretzels, the classic should be the one we include! Shaped similar to a heart, the soft pretzel would definitely be loved by everyone. Also, fun fact, it is no sweat to make this classic. But hey, these pretzels may be easy to make, but undoubtedly hard to forget!

Dips 

For the dips, why don’t we have 3 different types? 

For the first dip, we have the Smoky Sun-Dried Tomato and Walnut. Inspired by the Romesco recipe, the dip is oozing with a smoky flavor and texture. For the ingredients, there’s walnuts, red pepper, sun-dried tomatoes, chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, lemon juice, smoked paprika, and olive oil. To fully enjoy the crunch of the walnuts, make sure to make the dip kind of chunky!  

Next up we have the Blackberry-Dijon Whipped Ricotta, a creamy and sharp dip. Upon blending dijon mustard, seedless blackberry jam, red wine vinegar, ricotta, lemon juice, and pink peppercorns, you’ll surely get that purple-tinged offering!  

For the last dip, let us do the Seven-Layer Greek dip. With seventeen ingredients, this dip is surely bursting with flavor. To do this recipe, we will need a Turkish bread loaf, chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, pine nuts, roasted capsicum strips, pitted kalamata olives, and small cherry tomatoes. It may seem like a lot of work, but actually, it is easy to assemble!  

Fruits, Vegetables, and Nuts

Moving on to the fruits, let us put some red grapes, grapefruit, pomegranates, pears, and figs.

To make it more healthy, the vegetables need to be placed in our graze box. Shall we put vegetables including broccoli, cherry tomatoes, carrots, and celery?  

For the nuts, we have pistachios, almonds, and cashews.  

Sweets 

Desserts make everything better, so how about adding some luxury chocolate brands?

Now that we have all our ingredients for the box, let us assemble it! 

1. Get your box and place wax paper on top of it.  

2. Visualize how you want the inside of your box, you may also use small bowls to separate some of the snacks. We recommend putting the deli items such as the vegetables and fruits in bowls.

3.  Place all the bowls and wine in the box first, move them around until you are satisfied.

4. To prevent the meat and cheese from getting hard, cover them with saran-type wrap. Keep in mind that if you are not going to consume it right away, place the meat and cheese inside of a cooler to avoid being spoiled. Take them outside once the grazing box is served.

5. Fill the holes inside the box with the pastry and sweets.
