We must keep our overall health and well-being in check. This includes our brain health. Exercising the body is a proven way to boost our immune system and release happy hormones. But we should not forget to do mental exercises as well. Our cognitive health should not be neglected because as the famous maxim says “Use it or lose it,” we should keep training our minds so we can keep using it to its maximum potential.
Mental exercises reduce the risk of developing cognitive impairments to our brain health associated with aging such as memory loss, Dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and many more. Being at home during this lockdown can be an opportunity for us to sharpen our mental abilities. This article gives you online and offline ideas to curb your lockdown fatigue and strengthen your cognitive abilities. Let’s get to the list!
1. Solve A Jigsaw Puzzle for your brain health
First on our mental exercise list is solving a jigsaw puzzle. If you have a jigsaw puzzle lying around the house, this is your opportunity to finally solve it! Solve this by yourself or with your family to double the fun. You will challenge your brain and improve your visual-spatial reasoning.
Mental exercises like these will not only give you a sense of accomplishment but also promotes heightened levels of concentration and focus. Set a daily goal of how much part of the puzzle you want to accomplish so you can monitor your progress and inspire you to work on it every day. Once you’ve finished solving the jigsaw puzzle, you can display it in your luxury home so you can be reminded of your achievement and the experience you had solving it.
2. Play logical games and mental exercises
Playing online games is already the craze for the younger generation because it serves as their source of entertainment and sort of escapism. Contrary to popular belief, online games don’t shape kids to have poor attention problems. In fact, games encourage communication, creativity, strategic planning, and teamwork.
The second item on our list of mental exercises is playing logical games. Today, there is a deluge of digital games available that can also improve mental sharpness. Experts recommend playing logical games like sudoku because it helps people improve concentration, reasoning, and analytical skills. You can also find sudoku games in your local newspapers if you prefer playing with an actual pen and paper.
Another idea copped from Juan Ponce Enrile, he shares that he plays the application Bejeweled on his tablet “to exercise my diminishing intellectual capacity.” Games like these are said to keep the brain “young.”

3. Solve mental exercises such as math problems to increase cognitive function
The third in our list of mental exercises is practicing mental math. You don’t need to be a math whiz to do this! Studies have shown that doing basic mental math problems physically bulks up your brain muscles. A researcher from Tohoku University in Japan revealed his research findings regarding the matter and proved that even simple equations stimulated both the right and the left hemispheres of the brain.
If you decide to pursue this technique, you can begin with easy equations and then build from there. You can also time yourself to see how fast you can solve the problem. You’ll be improving your math skills and working out your brain at the same time. Track your progress by noting them in your trusty journal or even on your phone.
4. Play Mahjong, it’s a mental and physical exercise
The fourth on our mental exercises list is playing Mahjong. Mahjong traces its origin from China for hundreds of years and apparently, it’s not just a game but also a brain booster! This is a game about strategy and skill that actually delays the effects of dementia. Regularly breaking out Mahjong tiles can keep one’s brain sharp and enhance their cognitive skills. This is one of the best brain training games.
Playing this ancient Chinese game also has a social aspect that fosters the feeling of belongingness, sportsmanship, which impacts overall mental health. It’s easy to conclude that playing Mahjong is not only a good mental exercise but also an avenue to connect with your peers that encourages stronger relationship bonds with others.
It’s time to consider buying yourself a tileset with a matching Mahjong table. These would look good and compliment your luxury house. Just like a Brittany property, investing in premium items will be a bang for your buck because it’s both classic and timeless.
5. Learn to solve a Rubik’s cube and reap its health benefits
The fifth idea in our mental exercises list is learning how to solve the Rubik’s cube. Turns out, there’s actually a technique in solving this colorful box! You can try solving it on your own first and then you can look it up online and follow the steps to understand the strategy and rationale of the game if you want a lighter brain exercise.
Solving a Rubik’s cube is said to develop your problem-solving skills and enhance your observational skills. It’s unbelievable to think that this small gadget can enable us to strengthen our brain’s capacity. Although just a disclaimer, solving a Rubik’s cube can be frustrating at first so you’ll also learn how to be patient in learning this new endeavor. Remember, good things come to those who wait! We’re all a work in progress after all.
6. Enjoy group Brain Exercises like Board Games
Second to the last item in this list of brain exercises is playing board games. Who would’ve thought that playing simple board games can actually sharpen our mental skills? Any board games will do because they stimulate the brain’s problem-solving and thinking skills. Some suggested thinking board games are Scrabble and Mastermind.
Scrabble will test your vocabulary skills and critical thinking skills. The more you stretch the brain to think, the stronger and agile it gets. On the other hand, Mastermind is a code-breaking game. Although it is a game of trial and error, you’ll be able to formulate your own technique and methods in cracking the code of your opponent. Think of Mastermind as a way to test and hone your analytical skills.
7. Learn a new language
Since we are in the middle of a stricter lockdown category, this is anchored to imposing a more stringent travel restriction. With borders closing, we don’t have a choice but to stay in our homes. A tip you can do to keep yourself mentally active and busy but at the same time also experience another culture in the safety of your own luxury home is to learn a new language!
Studies have shown that learning a new language helps in thinking skills and memory abilities. Learning a new language can develop new areas in the mind and elevate your brain’s focus ability. There have been studies conducted that prove the brain increases in size if one is learning a new language.
The explanation for this is that when you are learning a new language, you’re training your brain to become more receptive to new knowledge such as grammar vocabulary, foreign sounds, and many more. Not only are you expanding your special skills and brain training at the same time but you’re also exposing yourself to other cultures. Immersing yourself in a foreign language and culture is almost the same as traveling to the country itself!
In a way, you get to travel and brain training in the comfort of your own home.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to society, industries, and nations across the world. Now more than ever are we faced with underlying social issues and deep-rooted problems with the current systems in place. In many ways, it has forced us to reveal major human rights issues associated with healthcare and tackle them as humanitarians and as a community.
This list goes beyond the global humanitarian overview 2020. People aren’t limited to agencies when doing humanitarian work. The Filipinos on this list as strong in solidarity in protecting human welfare and aid. Global humanitarian action has got world leaders in a race to a fast emergency response to aid workers in the field.
With this is the rising empathy for the world and its people, as well as the environment and wildlife. New NGOs have emerged to bridge the gap between those who can give and those who are in need. Youth-led organizations have been formed to raise awareness on various issues as well, calling society to act with urgency. This drive for positive impact and community service might be the silver lining to the pandemic — one that we can sustain post-COVID.
Volunteer work and donations count as humanitarian work. Image by RODNAE productions.
Although it can be quite difficult to physically show up for humanitarian work in the time of lockdowns and airborne viruses, there are several ways to help those in need. But we’ll get to that in a bit!
First, let’s define humanitarianism and why it should be the next big thing in today’s society. By definition, humanitarianism is the active belief in the value of human life. It is the practice of benevolent treatment and assistance to other humans to reduce suffering and improve the conditions of humanity for moral, altruistic, and logical reasons.
Practitioners of this noble principle are called humanitarians. They are the people who have the passion to serve those in need. Usually, recipients are refugees, members of minorities, people with disabilities, orphans, victims of violence, and people suffering from famine and poverty.
There’s a misconception that you have to be a wealthy philanthropist to change the world, but that simply isn’t true. There are so many ways you can help, without that or super powers. In short, humanitarians are the real world heroes that we need to have and need to be.
Filipino Humanitarians Who Help Create A Better World
It’s no surprise that Filipino humanitarians are receiving unsolicited recognition around the world. We Filipinos are known for our good heart and hospitality after all. Let us get to know them in hopes that we may follow in their footsteps.
Ryan Gerseva, Founder of Virtualahan. Image by Good News Philippines.
1. Ryan Gerseva
Some humanitarians decide to fulfill a noble cause because of their experiences in life. Such is the case for Ryan Gerseva, who experienced employment discrimination for being diagnosed with Hepatitis B. From then on, he made it his life’s mission to make sure that others wouldn’t have to face the same discrimination he did.
In 2015, he launched Virtualahan. The goal of the company is to break down employment barriers for stigmatized people, including those with disabilities and recovering drug addicts. It does so by providing digital-focused job-skills training for roles that can be done remotely such as digital creative work and social media marketing. As of the present, he has helped over 600 Filipinos find work and a consistent source of income.
In 2019, Gerseva won the Inspired Leadership Award at The Performance Theatre (TPT) conference held in Seattle, the first Filipino to receive such a distinction. Previous winners of the said award include business magnate and Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson as well as American philanthropist Melinda Gates of Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He was also a Cisco Youth Leadership Award 2020 finalist, which recognizes the world’s most inspiring youth leaders. This year 2021, he was one of the few Filipinos who made it to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.
2. Brenda Escalante
Brenda Escalante is one of the many Filipino humanitarians working for the UNCHR – United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Currently based in the middle east, she goes wherever and whenever she is called upon to help refugees. From Serbia to Bangladesh to South Sudan, Brenda is a veteran in providing critical assistance to one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time.
Her advocacy as a United Nations Refugee Agency’s Protection Officer is for the refugee cause — to provide a dignified life for refugee families. She states in an interview with the United Nations that her inspiration comes from the refugees themselves, who possess unwavering resilience, courage, and determination to prevail over extreme hardships.

The Mediterranean migration routes to the European Union, based on Human Rights Watch interviews. Image by Human Rights Watch.
In 2015, Brenda was deployed to Serbia to help in the Mediterranean humanitarian crisis. The Mediterranean humanitarian crisis is a decades long world problem that remains to be critical. It pertains to the deadly Mediterranean voyages by migrants and asylum seekers who are willing to risk their lives to escape their violent, repressive, and warn torn countries such as Syria, Somalia, Nigeria, and Afghanistan. Their goal is to reach countries of the European Union in pursuit of better opportunities and generally a more humane way of life. However, these voyages are also the cause of thousands of deaths due to human rights violations, piracy, and the dangerous route itself, among others.
Brenda braved the harsh winter in Serbia that year, to ease the passage of refugees seeking asylum in a safer haven. It is her life’s duty to protect refugees from further abuse and provide them with a life they rightly deserve. She has been doing so for 10 years now.

The Marawi siege was a five-month-long armed conflict in 2017 between government forces and militant groups that forced more than 350,000 residents of Marawi and neighboring towns to flee and seek refuge in evacuation centers. The displaced families were then at a disadvantage, without access to basic rights such as health care and education. Like similar parts of the world, medical response and health awareness are often not prioritized in regions affected by disasters, conflict, and other humanitarian challenges.
Jhallelah Joy Amer is one of the dedicated humanitarians who work for CARE Philippines to address these critical humanitarian issues. She is the Project Officer of “Addressing Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) in Humanitarian Settings,” a joint partnership health program between CARE Philippines, Abbott, and The Abbott Fund. The said partnership is a 3 year medical mission benefiting the people of Marawi City and Lanao del Sur, critical areas in the Philippines marked by conflict.
Joy closely works with project participants and stakeholders from the Department of Health-Integrated Public Health Office of Lanao del Sur, City Health Office of Marawi, Department of Education, and other civil society organizations in Bangsamoro. Aside from providing medical care and assistance, she conducts information dissemination campaigns as well for a more sustainable approach.
Aside from this project, she was also the Nurse Community Mobilizer for CARE’s Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights program implemented in Marawi and Lanao del Sur. Prior to joining CARE Philippines, she worked as a Health Mobilizer for the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health-Northern Mindanao.
4. Qjiel Mariano
Qjiel Mariano and his cofounders were only 15 year old Junior High School students at the University of Santo Tomas when they initiated Streets To Schools. This project was their submission to the Young Bridging Leaders program. This program aims to empower young leaders to create projects that help fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. On account of the estimated 39.2 million out of school youths in 2017, Qjiel decided to continue the initiative for years to come and has even established chapters outside his university.
Pre pandemic, Streets To Schools volunteers would teach street children in Manila North Cemetery and those along the PNR railways. They also organized benefit concerts and other activities to help raise funds for the benefit of the children they taught. Because of their good work, the organization won People Defender of the Year from the Global Institute for Youth Development NYLC and was the winner of the Jesse M. Robredo Foundation Be Like Jesse Youth Grant Competition.
This year, Qjiel was recognized by US based organization Youth Service America’s Everyday Young Heroes for leading the literacy program Ladders to Literacy for Streets to Schools.
How We Can Be Humanitarians for United Nations
From founding companies that benefit the marginalized sectors, to risking their lives to help the oppressed and providing free health care to those without access to such, to establishing NGOs to help alleviate poverty and illiteracy — Filipinos all over the world have exemplified what humanitarianism truly is. Notice that the list includes people of different gender and age from different parts of the Philippines, with some extending their efforts outside the country.
Established humanitarians help us understand that anyone can leave a positive impact in the world, and we can start by helping our local communities.
Here are simple tips to start becoming a humanitarian:
1. Discover your advocacy
Internalize what cause you are most moved by. Some examples of advocacies to choose from are forest and wetlands protection, wildlife conservation, sustainability, women empowerment, financial literacy, the LGBTQ movement, freedom of speech, and indigenous groups, among others. It’s normal to want to help in every cause but focus on one first. You’ll be able to help more this way.
2. Apply to an NGO or organization based on your advocacy
Being part of something bigger for the greater good is a lifetime achievement. There are various organizations available online to choose from, such as Streets To Schools, Save The Seas, and Pasay Pups. Make sure that you match the organization to your advocacy. There are also some NGOs such as The Initiative PH that have departments specific to an SDG (Sustainable Development Goal). They will usually have an application process that would require you to answer a few questions such as what tasks you can help with.
3. Be informed and actively participate in discussions
Once you join an organization, it will be much easier for you to find resources to learn more about your advocacy and its current situation. The group administrators will also inform you on activities you can participate in and assign you tasks that you choose to be a part of.
You can explore further by reading fact checked articles and even enrolling in short courses on issues you are interested in. Ivy league universities such as Harvard offer short courses on International Human Rights in the context of humanitarianism for example, but there are local institutions that offer these as wel like the Kaya Humanitarian Leadership Academy which only takes a couple of hours to finish.
4. Donate/volunteer/campaign for the greater cause
Donation drives are everywhere due to the pandemic. However, some institutions are always open for donation as well, such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). When it’s much safer to go outside and participate in on ground activities, you’d make such a difference as a volunteer teacher or cleaner for an ocean cleanup drive. You are also obliged to spread the word so that others can learn the good news and do the good deed. It always starts small, but the positive impact is a ripple effect that the world would thank you for.

Travel to Morocco with Moroccan Spiced Late
You can spice up your morning with this fragrant Moroccan coffee. The aromatic spices that are added to the ground dark coffee beans bring a unique flavor, and a nice balance for the natural bitter flavor of coffee.
The Moroccan spiced coffee is best for brewing in an automatic drip maker or French coffee press. If you don’t have a coffee/spice grinder, you can substitute ground coffee and ground spices and stir them together to mix.
All you have to do is gather the ingredients and place them into a coffee grinder and process. Remember that the spiced coffee is best used immediately. In case you don’t need all of it, you can store the remaining coffee in a light-proof, airtight container.
Use the spiced ground coffee – one to two tablespoons of the mixture per serving, but keep in mind that the ground spices may clog the filter basket in electric espresso makers, so other brewing methods may be considered such as a french press, pour over, or drip coffee machine. You can serve the spiced coffee black, or with sugar and hot milk, depending on your preference.

For many retirees, the place where they want to retire is often a place where you always wanted to go but do not have the time to visit, or a place with better weather. For others, relocating to one of your retirement places of choice means getting an amazing retirement income and lifestyle. Some think about moving near their grandchildren, even if it means spending a little bit of extra if it is in a prime location.
But how do you know if the location you chose is the best place for retirement? Here are some characteristics of a great place to retire.
What Makes the Best Retirement Place?

Some retirees will opt to have a retirement home that offers a lot of social interaction and a sense of community.
Suggested read: Why Early Retirement Should the Norm | Brittany Corporation
1. A variety of homes just for retirement places has a good retirement income
Sure, you can invest in the most beautiful house in the Philippines, or check listings for
most expensive houses in the Philippines or mansions in the Philippines. But retirees are empty nesters, meaning they only have themselves (and their partners) in their retirement home. This means the location should offer not only luxury properties that you can be proud of, but also luxury real estate that has age-friendly features. One-level properties like a luxury condo or a one-level luxury house and lot are ideal. If the location has multiple-level homes, like most mansions in the Philippines, retirees will choose those that have very convenient modes of transport like ramps and elevators, and those that do not have multiple entries (ex. Open-plan homes).
2. Excellent public transportation
Having a car to go to and from wherever you need to be is great, but there will be instances where you need to rely on public transportation. Excellent public transportation is great for you to maintain independence. They are also great alternatives if your car is unavailable. In order to determine whether a transportation system of a city is excellent, you need to look at the available modes, accessibility, infrastructure, and cost.
Some of the questions you can ask yourself are:
● Can you go to and from the supermarket using more than one mode of transportation?
● Are there too many or too few transfers?
● Is the ratio of transportation modes to commuters greater or smaller?
● Are the transportation hubs a few minutes away?
● Does it have elevator facilities and transportation personnel to help guide you?
● Are there ridesharing options?
3. Nearby health care facilities.
As you age, being near to healthcare facilities and services is an important consideration. You would want to live near a doctor or a clinic that can provide you with emergency health care and triage, especially if you are not aware of any medical issues that you may have in the future now. Access to a major pharmacy chain will be helpful so it is easier for you to get your prescription medicine. A major hospital nearby can make it easier for you to receive medical care and comply with a treatment plan.
A lot of retirees also consider health insurance premiums. They would want the place where they retire to have good hospitals with modern amenities and social security benefits. Some countries, like the Philippines, even have a local office for the World Health Organization.
4. A good economy and state income tax
If you do plan to work after your retirement, make sure that the location offers a lot of job opportunities. On the other hand, the Internet already allows just about anyone, even retirees, to work from anywhere at any time, so physical location may not be a factor. But the physical location is a factor when it comes to your retirement fund. You would want to choose a place that has a significantly lower cost of living and allows you to have the basic conveniences and enjoy a little bit of luxury now and then. The state income tax goes into play still. A country with a good state income tax can really help boost the reason of retiring in a place.
5. Great public services and social security benefits
It helps if the local community you choose to settle upon retirement has services and facilities that are free or at a discounted fee for senior citizens. They would want to see their state taxes used for good. They would also want their social security income maximized. Some neighborhoods have a sponsor program for senior citizens that offer free activities such as movies and concerts. Some neighborhoods also have policies in place where they provide free groceries, multivitamins, and even a birthday cake on their special day.
6. Year-round weather you can actually tolerate.
Weather forecasts may be helpful, but sometimes, first-person accounts and personal experiences matter. You can schedule a long-term vacation at the locations of your choice in order to get a feel if you can tolerate the weather. It also pays if you schedule your vacation days before the shift in the season. Who wouldn’t want to walk around a national park randomly?
7. Socialization opportunities.
Sometimes, it can be bothersome to change a lightbulb or have no one to look after your houseplants. In these cases, a good neighbor or living in a street with equally sociable people will help you live and enjoy your retirement life without worry. Although social distancing is encouraged, knowing the fact that you have people in the neighborhood to rely on can be comforting. Whether it be locals or foreign residents, as long as there is a good community, it will surely be a popular retirement destination.
8. Proximity to family members.
Retirees consistently want to move in with their family, and if they have grandchildren, the better. This means either relocating to where their children and grandchildren are, or residing in a home that is just enough for them but can still entertain guests. It would also helo is the state sales tax is good where their families are close. Social security is really important.
Consider these retirement places when you plan to
1. Vietnam
Vietnam is a Southeast Asian country located at the eastern edge of the Indochinese Peninsula.
Known for its beaches, rivers, Buddhist pagodas and bustling cities, Vietnam is both a tourist destination and a best place for retirement for some retirees, simply because of the median home price cost of living comfortably. Moreover, the cuisine is one of the fascinating and unique cultural features offered by the country.
Also, more and more people in Vietnam speak English. Retirees will not have a hard time adapting to the local language as English is becoming more popular and important in Vietnam.
2. France
For the most part, France is a country that has a temperate climate. But if retirees are seeking warmer climates, they can always look towards the Midi, which is a French term for the deep south of the country. The Provence and Languedoc regions are great for retirees who can tolerate mild winters and very hot summers. Paris, on the other hand, has cool and fairly winters and hot summers, while the mountainous regions of the Alps, the Pyrénées, and the Massif Central and the eastern regions of Alsace-Lorraine have colder winters.
The real estate in country towns and villages is fairly cheap with a good median home price, and if you are not satisfied with your townhouse or a bungalow with a garden, you can always go on a road trip towards the next beautiful town via the country’s excellent road systems. Moreover, the healthcare services are the best in the world and are considerably lower than in the US.
3. Spain

Spain is another well-developed country with excellent yet affordable living and an accommodating climate.
Warm weather, excellent cuisine, a welcoming culture, and a relaxed lifestyle – that is Spain for you. No wonder plenty of retirees are considering Spain their retirement home. But what mainly attracts retirees to Spain is the median home price. Compared to other European countries, Spain is considerably lower. Even if you choose to live in the city center, you can snap up a retirement home and enjoy a comfortable life. Moreover, the friendly locals and the breezy lifestyle in Spain make it enticing for retirees who wanted to spend their golden years in peace. Popular expat locations in Spain include the Canary Islands, Madrid, Barcelona, Marbella, the Costa Del Sol, and Alhaurín El Grande.
4. Malaysia

Malaysia has, and continues to attract retirees thanks to its warmer climate and proximity to vacation hotspots.
Malaysia may have all of the elements you need for the best place for retirement, but its year-long climate and access to over 878 islands with “white-sand beaches” take the cake. Moreover, it is a huge bonus for retirees to be able to travel cheaply, easily, and quickly to other countries in Asia. This is because Kuala Lumpur, which is the capital of Malaysia, is an international hub, with flights going to Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and even Australia in under 4-6 hours.
The average year-round temperature in Malaysia is 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and you only have two seasons (wet and dry) to mind.
Of course, being able to integrate into the community using a common language, which is English, is another plus.
5. Philippines

Made up of 7,107 islands, the Philippines is a formidable choice when it comes to retirement places.
The Philippines may not be the first country retirees think of when considering locations as their next retirement home. But it checks all of the boxes and more.
In the Philippines, retirees can lead a comfortable life for less than P50,000 per month. This amount already includes median home price, accommodation, dining out, local travel, and transportation. Moreover, the great weather and the people’s hospitality, and family-centered culture can entice anyone to settle down in the country. The cost of living may be a little bit expensive in certain areas like Makati City but are significantly less in neighboring and suburban locations. Also, you only need to plan and take a short trip to visit and enjoy any of the multiple beaches in the Philippines.
If you wish for a mountainous retreat as your retirement home, cooler locations like Tagaytay are perfect for you. Tagaytay, which is just 20 minutes from Metro Manila, sits on a ridge 2,100 feet above sea level, has both commercial and residential developments that make it easier for property buyers to invest in the most beautiful house in the Philippines or choose any of the most expensive houses in the Philippines.

Crosswinds Tagaytay calls to mind a picturesque Swiss town. Rows of chalet-inspired luxury homes sit on a lush terrain located at one of the highest points of Tagaytay.
Crosswinds Tagaytay, for example, is a hundred-hectare Swiss-inspired community surrounded by the sight and scent of over 35,000 pine trees, the picturesque view of the lush terrains of Tagaytay City, and the commanding Swiss-inspired luxury house and lot units, which are all situated along the natural slopes of the exclusive community. Crosswinds Tagaytay is also home to a wide array of Swiss-themed properties that can be your next retirement home, including The Crosswinds Grand Quartier, a Swiss resort condotel with luxury condo units for sale or rent; The Terraces of Lausanne, a residential development that promises sweeping panoramas, with views of Laguna de Bay, Manila Bay, and the lush hills of Tagaytay; and Alpine Villas, home to six to eight-story Swiss chalet-inspired mid-rise villas hidden from the hustle and bustle of the Tagaytay City proper.
Final Words
Retirement planning is the process of determining your retirement goals, and the actions and decisions necessary to achieve those goals. Choosing the best place for retirement is just one aspect of retirement planning. You need to put in considerations that are meaningful to you, especially as you age.

While the world is not yet over the COVID-19 crisis, most of us are certainly desperate for a semblance of normalcy. Now, more than ever, people need to have a source of optimism — of hope. We do our best to keep up with our friends as well as current events, like the Tokyo Olympics held just this past month. With that out of the way, what should we expect this Summer Paralympics 2021?
The Summer Paralympics, more than just a symbol of unity, have long since inspired us with its message of overcoming adversity in achieving excellence. Amid this border-spanning adversity, this message is even more relevant as the world struggles with challenges that have ended millions of lives and upended international economies.
In today’s article, we at Brittany will discuss the upcoming Summer Paralympics 2021 and why you should be excited about it.

History of the Summer Paralympics Games
Also known as the Paralympics, this is an international event composed of multiple sports competitions made for participants with disabilities. The Paralympics accommodates many differently-abled athletes, including those with muscle power impairment, vision impairment, intellectual impairment, limb deficiency, short stature, and much more. These games are held every four years and are organized in parallel to the same city as the Olympics. It is governed by the IPC or the International Paralympics Committee.
According to the IPC website, there are ten categories of Paralympics athletes allowed to compete: impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment, and intellectual impairment.
To give you a sense of where the Summer Paralympics began, Brittany will provide you with a summary of the Paralympics’ history.
Sports for athletes living with disabilities have existed for over a century. Even during the 1800s, there were already sports clubs for deaf people in Berlin. However, it wasn’t until after the Second World War that the concept took hold.
1944: Dr. Ludwig Guttman’s rehabilitation center
At the request of the British Government, neurologist Ludwig Guttman opened a rehabilitation center in the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, England. The center was mainly to help treat many WWII veterans with spinal injuries, most of which suffered disabilities that left them partially paralyzed. One of the center’s main activities for rehabilitation involved sports.
1948: Stoke Mandeville Games
Four years later, in July 1948, Dr. Guttman organized the first competition involving WWII veterans, taking place in his rehabilitation facility at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital. This was a milestone for the disabled and would soon pave the way for the modern Paralympics games.
The competition was small, involving only 16 injured veterans (14 men and two women) who took part in an archery competition against each other. The event happened at the same time as the first post-war Summer Olympics in London.
At the next Olympics in 1952, Dutch war veterans joined the competition, cementing the start of the movement’s spread. The event was then dubbed the International Stoke Mandeville Games and had occurred every year until 1959.
1960: First Paralympic Games
A short time later, in 1960, the Stoke Mandeville Games, which began with a single sport and 16 participants, became the first Paralympic Games. Held in Rome, Italy, the international event now has 400 differently-abled athletes from 23 countries competing in 8 sports events.
Since then, the Paralympics have taken place concurrently with the Olympics every four years. The first Winter Games was also held in 1976 in Sweden and has also followed the Olympics. Both Paralympics games also have an Opening and Closing ceremony.
After the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, Korea, and the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, France, the Paralympics organizers and the IOC (International Olympics Committee) agreed on the “one bid, one city” practice, which dictated that whichever city bids to host the Olympics will also hold the Paralympics.
Establishment of the Paralympics
In the same year that the first Summer Paralympics games were held in Rome, the International Working Group on Sport for the Disabled was created to investigate sports problems for people with disabilities.
This resulted in creating the International Sport Organization for the Disabled (ISOD), which made a standard for accommodating athletes who could not enter the International Stoke Mandeville Games: athletes with vision impairment, amputees, people with paraplegia, and those who have cerebral palsy.
The ISOD primarily included 16 affiliated countries. Soon enough, other international sports organizations catering to differently-abled persons cropped up, such as the CPISRA (Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association) and the IBSA (International Blind Sports Federation).
Soon, the logistical challenge of hosting the Games and the increased need for regional and national level representation demanded creating an overarching, more comprehensive international organization with the sole purpose of hosting and continually improving the Paralympics.
1989: The IPC was born
On September 22, 1989, the International Paralympic Committee was founded in Dusseldorf, Germany, to govern the Paralympic Movement internationally. It has since then organized the Paralympics to significant effect.
An Overview of the Summer Paralympics 2021
After a year of delays because of the pandemic, the world is more excited about the Summer Paralympics than usual. With a basic understanding of the Paralympics movement, we can now better appreciate the coming Summer Paralympics 2021 event in Tokyo, Japan. From August 25 to September 5, 2021, Paralympics athletes will compete in 22 sports across a whopping 537 events.
With that, here are the things to look out for in this upcoming Game.
Paralympic Numbers
168 teams
More than 4000 athletes
22 different sports
537 events
21 venues
As the Paralympics Movement evolves, two new games will be added this year: taekwondo and badminton. However, this also entailed removing two other games; there won’t be any 7-a-side soccer and sailing for this year’s Paralympics.
Para taekwondo is a relatively new sport; it was only in 2005 when the Para-Taekwondo Committee was formed, and only in 2009 when it held its first world championship. On the other hand, badminton has been around for longer. Both games debuted in the Parapan American Games last 2019.
Opening Ceremony
The Tokyo 2021 Paralympics will begin a month and a day after the Olympics. An opening ceremony will herald it with the same amount of grandeur as its counterpart. Representing the entire world across ages, sexes, and even disabilities, the opening ceremony has traditionally celebrated the moment with large displays and concerts.
Local interest in the Paralympics was already at a boiling point before the pandemic, with 3.1 million bookings for only 2.3 million available tickets.
Strict COVID-19 restrictions may have eliminated large-scale in-person gatherings, but they didn’t manage to remove the hype. Officials are planning the opening ceremony to accommodate safety practices. You can watch it from the safety of your luxury house with your family or through an online watch party.
Paralympic Stars

Of course, the Paralympics wouldn’t be complete without its roster of Paralympic stars. All eyes are focused on world-renowned Paralympics achievers, most notably the USA athletes, who won a total of 115 medals in the last 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio. Gold medalists such as Deja Young for Track, Shown Morelli for cycling, Allysa Seely for the triathlon, and Jessica Long for swimming will be competing again in Tokyo, adamant in defending their well-earned medals.
Specific athletes to keep your eyes on are Oksana Masters, who already earned her medals in the winter rowing, and Nordic skiing, who is now setting her eyes on this year’s medals for cycling after she finished the fourth last time in Rio.
Chuck Aoki, a star of wheelchair rugby, aims for a gold medal after winning both silver and both from the last two Paralympics events. The US team for wheelchair basketball and volleyball will be defending their championship status in the Tokyo tournaments.
Of course, the Paralympics wouldn’t be genuinely complete without the appreciation of our athletes, who will no doubt be aiming for the top in swimming, taekwondo, and athletics events.
Women’s Marathon
The marathons are one of the Paralympics’ most-watched events, and the one coming up this September is one of the most anticipated.
With a total of 16 medals throughout her whole career, Tatana McFadden from team USA is a star on the tracks, with a victorious and exciting record during her career. She has garnered a total of 22 wins in marathons from Boston, Chicago, London, and New York competitions and has swept the foursomes from 2013 to 2016. She’ll be gunning for the gold in Tokyo.
Men’s Marathon
On the men’s side, Daniel Romanchuk from team USA has recently become the world’s top marathoner, championing competitions in Boston, Chicago, London, and New York before going to the Tokyo Paralympics with the singular desire to win the gold.
One of his fated competitors for the gold is Micheal Roeger, which has so far held the men’s world record in all of the four marathons that he’s raced to date, including T46 5,000m and 1,500m tracks. How will he fare against team USA’s Romanchuk?
Swimming
All eyes are on British Alice Tai, following her amazing feat as a multiple world record holder for the S9 category. The tail also holds the record for three different strokes in the 50m category (backstroke, freestyle, and butterfly) and two records in the 100m category, and another in the 200m category. Everyone’s on edge, wanting to see how many medals she would bring home for the year.

Ernie has participated in the 2016 Rio Paralympics, won the three gold medals in the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia, and bagged the silver in the 2019 World Para Swimming in London, cementing his legacy as one of the most decorated para-athletes in the country.
Gary Bejino for Swimming
Another one for the swimming events, Gary Bejino from Albay, is a silver and 2-bronze medalist from the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia — a qualification that finalized his eligibility to join the upcoming Paralympics.

Mangliwan, a native of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, exceeded the Paralympics qualification standard for his category after finishing in a blazing 1 minute and 2.17 seconds (the average is 1 minute and 3.27 seconds). He is also a Rio Paralympian and won gold and silver medals in the 2015 ASEAN Para Games.
Jeanette Aceveda for Discus Throwing

Who Are The Filipino Leaders In the 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 List?
The Philippines made it to the list even in the first Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia List back in 2016. It included 10 Filipinos in the roster total of 300. Featured in that year’s list is Amin Hataman, who was 15 at that time, under the Healthcare and science category for inventing a type of biodegradable plastic made from coconut.
This year, 8 Filipinos made the country proud for being part of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia List. Let’s get to know them and their impressive works.
1. Gab Mejia (The Arts | National Geographic)
Gab Mejia is a 24-year-old explorer, conservation photographer, and environmental storyteller for the National Geographic Society. A Civil Engineering fresh graduate last July 21, he was a member of the Environmental and Energy Engineering Research Group of the University of the Philippines Diliman. He is also a member of the WWF Philippines National Youth Council and a columnist at The Manila Times.
His work focuses on raising awareness about the environment, particularly the wetlands, endangered wildlife, and indigenous communities. In 2019, he was awarded a filmmaking fellowship by the Jackson Wild Media Lab, which is considered the Oscars of nature filmmaking. Mejia is also a co-founder of Youth Engaged in Wetlands, a youth network across 30 countries launched in 2018 focused on the conservation of wetlands and migratory birds.
2. Edward Christopher Dee (Healthcare and Science | Harvard Medical School)
Edward graduated from Harvard Medical School this year, after taking up Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University. When the pandemic broke out in the Philippines, he served on the Covid-19 task force, which used social media to combat fake news about the virus. He also used his medical expertise to increase public awareness by contributing articles to the likes of Philippine Daily Inquirer and Rappler.
He continues his service for others by working as a research fellow at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, finding ways to deliver better care to disadvantaged populations in the U.S. and the Philippines.
3. Carmina Bayombong (Finance and Venture Capital)
Carmina Bayombong saw a grueling problem affecting the Philippine youth and tried to solve it. Until today, Filipinos suffer from a lack of financial literacy and access, beginning at a young age. This continues a cycle of poverty and continued adversity. In 2016, she cofounded InvestEd, one of the country’s top educational loan providers.
The startup has its own credit rating and risk control algorithm for lending to financially disadvantaged youth in the Philippines. In short, it allows members of the underprivileged Filipino youth to maximize their potential in a data-driven and post-pandemic world, building a window to a future of financial stability.
For this, she has previously won multiple awards such as The Philippines Outstanding Women in Nation’s Service, Cartier Women’s Initiative Laureate for Southeast Asia, Dubai World Expo’s Top 120 Global Innovators, and Asia Pacific Leader at Obama Foundation.
4. Guendoline Rome Viray Gomez (Entertainment and Sports)
If you haven’t listened to ‘Narcissist’ by No Rome and The 1975, this is a sign that you should. If you’re into lo-fi and indie-pop artists such as Joji, then you are going to enjoy his music. In fact, his music is so good, he’s a Forbes 30 Under 30 member.
Known as “No Rome,” 23-year-old Gomez was born into a musical family. He began producing and releasing his own music at the age of 12 and received attention in the local Philippine scene, before gaining an even bigger audience when he moved to London in the UK. Presently, he is the first-ever Filipino to perform at Coachella in 2019, the largest annual music festival in the world.
5. Ryan Gerseva (Social Impact)
Ryan Gerseva experienced employment discrimination in his life for being diagnosed with Hepatitis B and decided he wanted to change the system.
6. Rexy Josh Dorado (Media, Marketing and Advertising)
In the time of digital transformation and online interaction, Rexy Josh Dorado saw a grand opportunity. He founded Kumu in 2018, an app that proudly enforces a positive and lucrative space for Filipino content creators. Today, it is a household name and one of the top-grossing social media apps in the Philippines. More than 6 million registered members use the app to watch and live stream themselves performing talents, chatting about their interests, or absolutely anything.
However, Dorado isn’t finished yet. Right now, the Kumu team is working on integrating an AI-powered interface for e-commerce and partnering with global organizations for expansion.
7-8. Angela Chen and Aurelien Chu (Social Impact)
Eskwelabs was launched by the power duo Angela Chen and Aurelien Chu in Manila in May 2019. It began as a part-time data science program that utilized project-based learning and offered one of the first job guarantee-backed upskilling programs in the country. It lowered the cost of a data science education and accelerated employment opportunities by connecting learners directly with employers.
Right now, Eskwelabs is still an ed-tech startup that shows promising results already. It aims to help underserved members of the Philippine community such as stay-at-home mothers and individuals without a high school or college degree by providing training and access to remote work opportunities. It has taught more than 3 thousand people who are now in stable employment.

UP NEXT: Home Among The Stars: The Billionaire Space Race
The space race has been around much longer than social media, but it recently has become the focus of prominent personalities that the world is paying attention to as well. No longer reserved to governments and interstellar agencies, the space race is now dominated by the world’s famous billionaires and their ventures.
But what is the space race anyway? Why are some of the rich’s most recognizable faces pour in so much money and time to finally reach the stars?
Space Race: An Overview

What started as a competition between two countries became a unified cause to journey through the stars.
In the 20th century, the Space Race was born out of a competition between the United States and the former Soviet Union. The Space Race was seen as a way to exert dominance as the superpower: achieve superior spaceflight capability. From missile rockets, it gradually escalated into sending satellites, animals, and eventually, men into space and other neighboring planets. The Space Race is also credited for the formation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA, and the installation of the International Space Station (ISS) in low Earth orbit, which is home for the selected few who have ventured to outer space.
The ISS may look like a futuristic luxury home, but it is designed specifically to do many things. In the initial agreement between NASA and Roscosmos, its Russian counterpart, the ISS serves as a laboratory, observatory, and factory while providing transportation, maintenance, and a station for possible future missions to the Moon, Mars, and asteroids. Since the 2010 United States National Space Policy, the ISS also serves commercial, diplomatic, and educational purposes.
Enter the billionaires space race

In the press, there are at least three names who are making the headlines for the following similarities: One, they all made their fortunes in other industries, amassing (and sustaining) billions of dollars and then settling their sights on space ventures. Second, they all founded their companies within a few years of each other, which makes them the current frontrunners in the 21st century-version of the Space Race. While there are a number of startups all over the world who have been working on space solutions, they through their companies have largely benefited from strategic partnerships with government agencies. Moreover, they occasionally partner with legacy aerospace companies.
1. Elon Musk
You cannot mention his name without associating Space Exploration Technologies Corp or SpaceX, which was founded in 2002 as an aerospace manufacturer, space transportation services and communications company. The company was established by Musk focusing on a single goal: to reduce space transportation costs in order for humans to make Mars our next home.
After making a fortune in online payments and electric cars, Musk has made headlines thanks to the many milestones his space company made. Many of these milestones include building rockets that are capable of shuttling satellites and other cargo into Earth’s orbit, which is a considerable achievement for a commercial company given the fact that one trip requires speeds topping 17,000 miles per hour. SpaceX also built a 1,500-piece constellation of internet-beaming satellites as well. SpaceX also debuted the most powerful rocket in operation and showed the world synchronized landings of its boosters. The company also developed a spacecraft that successfully carried astronauts to the ISS.
SpaceX also came up with a solution on how to land and reuse much of its hardware after space flights. Beyond that, SpaceX’s expertise, solutions, and operations scale allowed them to win massive business contracts with both NASA and the US military. Moreover, SpaceX is focused on creating a spaceship that will take humans to the moon and Mars.
The milestones Musk and his SpaceX achieved created a fervent following who always champion the billionaire and his company’s efforts. And why shouldn’t he, when his company has almost single-handedly disrupted the rocket industry, which was considered fairly stagnant and somewhat uninteresting for a couple of decades. The commercial space sector was also born, and grew, largely thanks to SpaceX breaking records, making history, and accomplishing things that industry experts once thought impossible to do.
But if you are willing to bet if Musk is planning to build his next luxury house on Mars? Don’t plan on it just yet. Musk said on one occasion that he’d “like to die on Mars, just not on impact.“
2. Jeff Bezos
Jeff Bezos is our second billionaire on the list mainly because of the SpaceX vs Blue Origin rivalry. Bezos, who founded and grew Amazon into a multinational technology company that forays on e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence, also established Blue Origin, a privately funded aerospace manufacturer and sub-orbital spaceflight services company out in Kent, Washington.
Similar to Musk’s goal, Bezos has said that his space company aims to help create a future where people live in space. The difference is that while Musk believes in colonizing planets, Blue Origin is focused on solutions to make lush, rotating manufactured worlds in orbit a reality.
On the other hand, Bezos and his company has made considerable efforts to disassociate itself from SpaceX. While SpaceX made achievements thanks to its speed and trial-and-error process, Blue Origin wants to take it slowly and meticulously in order to eventually send people to live and work in spinning, orbital space colonies in order to extend human life once Earth reaches a theoretical, far-off energy scarcity crisis. Since founding in 2000, Blue Origin has developed cheaper rocket and spacecraft technologies towards building the extraterrestrial housing Bezos envisioned. The company also laid out their plans to develop a lunar lander and build a moon base called Blue Moon with NASA. It also shared its plans for a huge orbital rocket named New Glenn and a constellation of internet-beaming satellites.
However, it can’t be helped that Bezos’ Blue Origin is compared to Musk’s SpaceX, from its ambitious technologies down to the number of coveted contracts won. Musk, on more than one occasion, has called Bezos a “copycat.” SpaceX also bested Blue Origin in competitions for several government contracts, one of which is the lunar lander project with NASA, and is currently being contested by Blue Origin. Also, Blue Origin’s goals seem to lean more on tourism, thanks to its
New Shepard vehicle project. The New Shepard, and its capacity to go above the Kàrmàn Line at 100 kilometers (62 miles) altitude, which is the internationally-recognized border of space, is said to create a very exclusive niche of tourism: suborbital space travel.
3. Sir Richard Branson
Sir Richard Branson, who owns an empire of Virgin-branded businesses, is definitely not afraid of staking his claim as the space baron. Enthusiasts found that Virgin Galactic shares similar business plans with Bezos’ New Shepard at Blue Origin: both wanted to sell tickets to any thrill seeker who wanted to go on supersonic flights to the edge of space.
On the other hand, the technology used by Virgin Galactic is far too different from Bezos. Instead of a vertically launched rocket and capsule, Branson’s company aims to fly people to space using a winged, rocket-powered spaceplane instead. While Bezos and his team were successful in their spaceflight test, Branson actually beat the Amazon founder to it. It also made some of the Virgin Galactic employees who were tapped as crew members in the flight as newly-minted astronauts.
But the road towards that successful spaceflight (and edging out Bezos in his claim in the process) was arduous and hard. The 2014 test flight of the SpaceShipTwo tragically killed a co-pilot. Moreover, there were other technical difficulties that Virgin Galactic needed to iron out before the company deemed the spacecraft safe enough to fly its Branson to space.
It remains to be seen who will emerge as the final victor in the Branson vs. Bezos battle, but Branson has another notable achievement up his sleeve. The Virgin Orbit, which spun off from Virgin Galactic back in 2017, sent its first batch of satellites to orbit in January this year. Although it is not as powerful as Musk’s Falcon 9s or Bezos’ planned New Glenn rockets, Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne, which takes off from beneath the wing from a Boeing 747 jet, is considered an industry leader in a niche race to develop rockets designed specifically for hauling small satellites.
Virgin Galactic is not just focused on developing solutions for space ventures. It intends to use its solutions to improve our way of life on Earth. For example, Virgin Galactic aims to use its suborbital, supersonic jet to shuttle people between cities at breakneck speeds in the future.
Earth: Still the best one we got vs the space race

Space and multi-planetary living may be a dream close to becoming a reality, but for the rest of us, the dream is already at home.
Musk, Bezos, and Branson: all three have similar but distinct extraterrestrial ambitions, and share a common goal of making space flight cheaper for people to travel and live in space. However, as much as the rest of the world also wants to share the dream, the 21st century space race can be very well a very expensive hobby.
After all, why pour so much money, time and technology seeking a home in the stars, when you can have your very own heaven on earth? In an impassioned writeup by astrophysicist Paul Sutter, he listed four important reasons why Earth is still the best home, and that you don’t need to become a billionaire to enjoy it.
1. Air
Want to travel or live in a home where the climate is always cool and the oxygen is free? That’s Earth for you. As the only planet in the solar system that hosts an abundant supply of oxygen, you do not need to don that extra-heavy spacesuit in order to breathe fresh oxygen.
Moreover, if you want to truly live in a colder climate, you only need to head to a location that offers that 24/7. Locations that are full of vegetation ensure that you get fresh air, and a cooler climate.
2. Water
Water is another resource that is harder to find in space. While it is ridiculously common in the universe, it doesn’t mean you get the right quality in space. Water in space and on other planets are either frozen ice or are blasted in high-temperature pieces.
It is also one of the most important liquids to man. It is nice and liquid on the surface, and indicates a better viability to host life, thanks to our proximity from the sun.
3. Land
Seeking rugged terrains? We have lots of them here on Earth. Moreover, our mountains are a welcoming sight for the sore eyes, and are home to a multitude of interesting flora and fauna.
Earth has a nice, stable tilt, such that we at home are not subject to what Sutter calls “climatological gut-punching resets.” This means that you and your luxury home, for example, will not be subject to deadly environmental changes like periodic earthquakes and negative climates.
4. Stars
You do not need to go to space to experience the stars. You just have to be strategic when you choose your home. You can even invest in one in an exclusive location, just like these luxury homes at Brittany.

Brittany offers themed communities that not only inspire, but allow you to bask into the beauty of the natural surroundings, including the ever-changing skies.
