Lacrosse Basics

Lacrosse is a team sport that uses long-handled stick called lacrosse stick, also referred to as a crosse, and a small rubber ball. The sport is of Native American origin and is mostly played in the United States and Canada.

Lacrosse is played as a contact sport. The lacrosse stick has a head with loose mesh that catches and holds the lacrosse ball. The objective of each team is to score by shooting the lacrosse ball into the opponent’s goal in the same manner that a score is made in soccer. A team’s offense involves catching, carrying, and passing the ball until a goal is made. A team’s defense aims to keep the opposing team from scoring by getting the ball through stick checking, positioning, or body contact. There are ten players in a team, assigned to four positions: midfield, attack, defense, and goalie.

The Lacrosse playing field is 110 yards long and 60 yards wide. The goals are 6 feet wide and 6 feet high, sitting inside a circular “crease” that measures 18 feet in diameter.

Lacrosse combines the speed of basketball, the endurance of soccer, and the hitting common in hockey. Lacrosse is showing signs of serious growth as a team sports although it is still not in the level of football and soccer.

Lacrosse Training Programs

Lacrosse can be played by both men and women, regardless of age level. The sport is played in different age groups in American schools and colleges. Lacrosse training programs are available in many parts of the United States. The game requires speed and power and most training programs are geared towards the development of these skills that are necessary to be competitive players.

A good training program gives importance to the development of attributes that will be needed to become a successful Lacrosse player, such as effort, respect, discipline, and teamwork. Coaches train the participants in the program to be committed to their team and the game. Participants are trained, not only in the skills of Lacrosse, but also in the skills of living a good and balanced life.
