Stress is a natural reaction of the body whenever a person experiences a stressor. The physical and mental health respond to the changes and disputes. The body, however, is designed to adapt to new situations. The ability to take hold of the situation while under great pressure and tension is called good stress. Who created International Stress Awareness Day?

In 2018, the International Stress Management Association (ISMA) led by Carole Spiers has created the annual International Stress Awareness Week to spread awareness about stress prevention. This year 2022, the week-long celebration starts from November 7 until November 11. The theme of this annual program is about Building Resiliency by Working Together and Reduction of Stress. It includes comprehensive guides on how to be clearly aware of your mental situations.

With the current situation of the world including wars, crisis, and even personal problems, people may have a hard time coping with stress. A survey in 2021 conducted by Gallup says that 4 out of 10 adults around the world are battling with the symptoms of stress on a day-to-day basis. If there is something called stress that is good, there is also a bad stress that does not help with a person’s well-being and can cause serious health problems.

The recent conducted program about stress awareness sought to answer the common questions related to stress like the following:

  • How workplace changes affect mental being and resiliency (for example: the switch to work from home setup)
  • How people with mental illness can reach help from different organizations or support groups

How to Cope with Stress this International Stress Awareness Day?

  1. Know Your Stressors

Stressors can be things, situations, relationships, or people that trigger your stress hormones. For you to carry on with stress management, one of the strategies you need to do is to identify what triggers your anxiety and mental stress. Stressors can be identified as external and internal.

Internal Stressors are those that affect your emotional state. This can be led by fear, anxiety, or traits that you personally have. Worrying is a normal response of our brain when we enter a new situation, but the constant worry can lead to unnoticeable physical response like nail biting, excessive sweating, or sleeplessness. These symptoms are often associated to people with traits like perfectionism and self pity. On the other hand, External Stressors are the non-personal stress or also called as the social stressors. The triggers involved are the relationships from other people, social pressure, and workplace problems. Under this stressor is the change stressor which may be caused by life transitions like shifting to work, getting married, and having immediate decisions.

It is important to know and identify what triggers your emotional instability so that you can try to avoid and work on the things that might compromise your wellbeing.

Although the mind is the one that is responsible for stress management, your body also has the complete work to address unlikely situations.

While you increase the level of your physical level, you are minimizing the stress level and improving your mental wellbeing. The stress brought about by the environment like noise and pollution are controllable. Practicing deep breathing can divert your mind from any tension. Exercising is a free therapy for your brain, while you sweat and work out, your body releases hormones called endorphins.
