With a list of dates secured for the coming year, people are excited to start planning their vacation trips on the expected long weekends. You might want to start marking your calendars and contact your friends and family for a fun get-together on these long weekend schedules.

Different Types of National Holidays

There are two main types of national holidays in the Philippines – regular holidays and special non-working holidays. It is important to know the difference between these two, especially if you’re already in the workforce.

Knowing the difference between these two types of holidays is important if you’re in the workforce because the type of holiday will affect your payroll computation.

Regular 2024 Philippine Holidays

A regular holiday is declared and recognized nationwide. Employees must be paid by their employer regardless of whether they show up at work or not. Some industries offer their employees double pay to work during regular holidays, while others completely do not have business hours open.

These holidays are usually events that have been declared as national holidays for a long period of time already. They are usually dates that dedicated to a very important historical event or person, or perhaps something that is widely celebrated internationally.

Special Non-Working Holidays

On the other hand, a special non-working holiday is not necessarily declared nationwide. These holidays can be declared by different local government units or industries accordingly. Employees may or may not be paid depending on the policy of their respective owner.

Similar to regular holidays, employers also opt to offer double pay to employees who show up to work on special non-working holidays. Some of the awaited special non-working holidays in the country are those relating to the lunar calendar and eves before big holidays.

2024 Philippine Holidays

The president of the Philippines declared a total of 10 regular holidays and 8 special non-working holidays for a total of 18 holidays overall. Most of these dates are similar to those who have been proclaimed during this year, 2023.

Other well-known holidays, such as Islamic holidays, were not included in the list so it is expected that more proclamations declaring national holidays will be made throughout the coming year. Events relating to both the Islamic calendar and lunar calendar are some of the expected additional dates to be declared as national holidays.

If you’re planning to make plans next year, you’ll want to plan much ahead as filing for paid leaves near these dates can be quite a competition at the workplace. It’s also usually hectic at the schedules so you’ll want to finalize your plans soon and make reservations as early as possible.

Of course, holidays are declared as holidays for a reason. We are to celebrate these special events in our own ways, regardless of how small or big they may be. Always remember to pay homage to the events that happened on these dates.

Where to Spend your Holidays In

Reunite with Your Distant Loved Ones

Most of these plans usually involve out-of-town trips and family gatherings, like All Souls’ Day and Christmas Eve. It is best to make the trip and reunite with you loved ones as you don’t get many opportunities to meet up with your distant family members outside of these dates.

Especially when meeting up with relatives, people just can’t wait to visit their provinces and old homes. You wouldn’t want to miss on a reunion so make your plans as early as possible to ensure that most of your friends and family will be able to make time to meet up.

Go Out with your Friends and Family

If your family or friend group has been eyeing to go on a lengthy trip together, you’ll want to save the long weekend schedule for these. People usually want to go on road trips or fly abroad with their loved ones every once in a while, if given the chance.

Plan your family outing around the long weekend holidays in order to lessen the amount of vacation leaves you’ll have to take. Make sure to plan much further ahead, especially if you have several destination points in your itinerary.

Keep Things Simple

However, you don’t have to do anything grand every time during these days. Especially for the holidays which fall in between regular working days, you won’t really have much time and energy to go out-of-town. You can opt for something simple, like going to mall or establishment nearby.

You can also take this opportunity to do some plans you haven’t been able to fit in your schedule before because of how hectic work can be. Check out some establishments which might have opted to run even during the holidays.

You can also just simply spend some time at home and get your well-deserved rest. Getting a day’s worth of relaxation can help you a lot and your body will definitely thank you for it. Take a break and maybe watch some movies alone or with your family while eating some popcorn.
